WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

U.S. EPA and the City of Burlington are hosting a free Community-Based Water Resiliency (CBWR) workshop on Thursday, March 30, 2023 in the Winegard Board Room at RiverPark Place, in Burlington, Iowa. CBWR assists drinking water and wastewater utilities, and the communities they serve, in increasing resiliency to water interruptions from all hazards.

The workshop will provide an overview of climate change impacts on water resilience, as well as feature a utilities manager perspective on water resiliency and natural disasters. A panel will further discuss water resiliency and emergency planning.

In addition, a round-table discussion focused on both short- and long-term water shortages will give all participants a chance to discuss their plans and preparations for sustained operations without water services.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

  • Promote a better understanding of public-private sector interdependencies with water.
  • Foster a greater understanding of climate change and its potential impacts on water services.
  • Identify actions and resources needed to respond to and recover from a water emergency, both short- and long-term.
  • Assist stakeholders in building strong response plans and communications for water service
  • interruptions.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Drinking water and wastewater operators, emergency services sector personnel, food processing and manufacturing operators, public health and healthcare facility emergency planning staff, retirement home operators, livestock operators, educational institution personnel, and state primacy agency representatives.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS:

An application will be submitted for Iowa water and wastewater operators to receive continuing education units for participating in this workshop.
